I have a question…

  • Maybe. For a lot of common problems, like flat tires or busted brakes, we have the parts we need to get you back on the road the same day. However, if your bike needs more love or parts we don’t have on hand, we may ask you to bring it back so we can dedicate more focused attention to it. No matter what, the best thing to do is bring it by for an assessment—we can let you know how much the repairs will cost and when we can get them done by.

If you have a cargo bike, a trike, or any other specialty bicycle, you can come by or email us beforehand to make special arrangements for pick up and drop off.

  • No. Although we’re in favor of all non-car transport, we specialize in bicycles, and to provide the best service we must limit our repairs to only bicycles (including non-electric cargo bikes and tricycles). However, we might be able to help you air up your e-bike, and we can point you toward Robert at E-Bike Repair NYC (right down the block at 141 Tompkins Ave; call him at 718-973-4992 first), Fly E-Bike, Propel Cycles, and E&M E-bike for repairs close by.

  • We would love to! We sell bikes from Surly and also do custom builds. We also run an Instagram account dedicated to used bikes, @coolbikesfromcraigslist. No matter your budget, we’re happy to talk bikes with you and figure out the best way to get you on one of your own.

  • That depends. Come by the shop and we can take a look. We take into consideration the condition of the bike, the fit of the bike to you, the sentimental value of the bike, where you’re able to store the bike, what you’ll use the bike for, et cetera. If we determine we can fix the bike for less than you can go and buy a bike that’s better suited to you, we’ll recommend fixing it. Otherwise, we’ll help point you in the direction of a new one. We just want you to be happy with your bike, because that means you’ll ride it and eventually come back for more tune-ups. Win win.

  • Some bikes are made with durability in mind and some are made with a low initial cost in mind (and less miles before they fail). Or, someone’s selling a used bike for too much because they’re overvaluing it, or for a good deal because they’re moving, or they don’t want to store it, or they don’t know the value of what they have.

Bikes are kinda like clothes. The $2 shirt you buy from H&M will fall apart pretty quickly if you wear it a lot, but the black tie outfit you have tailored to you will last you a lifetime with the right care. Pretty extreme examples, but bikes are similar.

Do you want your bike to last you for the season, or for years to come? How far and how often do you want to ride it, and how much trouble will you be in if it fails? Would you rather spend some time learning about bikes and bike repair to save some money, or would you rather bring it into the shop when it needs a fix?

These are all things to think about when investing in a bike. We believe in the value of high quality things that are repairable, but we also understand that’s not possible or even necessary for every bike rider. Long story short: you usually get what you pay for, unless you really spend time learning about bikes until you can confidently identify a good deal on Craigslist.

  • We don’t, but we work with Sweet Tooth Fabrication, a local bicycle framebuilder who does repairs as well as build new frames. Email us (photos of the damage in question are quite helpful) or come by the shop for an assessment.

  • We don’t, but we can strip your frame down for painting and put it back together after it’s done. We recommend Carlos and Diego at Arcane Moto for the powder coating job of your dreams.

  • Probably. For really esoteric questions we might send you to the internet, but if you’re wondering if we can swap your old parts to a new bike frame we can help you figure it out.

  • Not yet, but we want to. We’re too busy fixing bikes to figure it out! Do you want to host a ride leaving from or ending at Bike Plant? Email us and let’s talk about it.
