Inspired by the folks over at Wheel Simple in Richmond, VA, we’ve created a repair fund where anyone can donate to help subsidize the cost of parts and repair for someone who can’t afford the necessary repairs to make their bike safe and functional.

The aim of this repair fund is to fill the gap between what we can provide without overextending ourselves and what our community needs but also can’t afford. So far, the shop has provided all of the services above from our own pocket, but this isn’t sustainable in the long term. Small margins are the norm at bike shops, and without help from our community, we can’t afford to give away the amount of service, education, and parts that riders in our area need to stay safe and mobile.

The money donated to the fund goes into a credit account at the shop. When someone can’t afford the entirety of the repairs that they need, we ask how much they can afford, and subsidize the rest using the Repair Fund—honor system style. Anyone can access this fund as many times as they need. In practice, many people return when they’re able and donate back into the Repair Fund.

Want to see the difference your cash makes? Check out our donation spreadsheet or sign up for email updates when you donate. Then again, you might not have to look at a spreadsheet or an email—just stopping by the bike shop will allow you to see your donation in action.

The best way to support our Repair Fund is to become a member. Your monthly contribution ensures we’ve got cash flow into our repair fund AND gets you some cool perks. You can also donate cash directly at the shop (this way no fees are taken by Square) or donate online (button above).

Thank you for making this possible!
